The recent Social Evening, organised by Rotary in Cork for senior citizens in the City Hall, was a great success.
More than 200 senior citizens were invited by Rotary to take part in a great social event where tea and sandwiches as well as cakes, chocolates and minerals were served. The guests, from all across the city were welcomed by the Rotary Presidents and the music started with a recital by the Army Band of the 1 st Brigade conducted by Capt. Ben Jacob. They were followed by the Kiely-Walsh Academy of Irish Dancers under the Direction of Mr. Miah Walsh.
Much loved Cork man Mr. Paddy O’Brien, who runs the Cork Over-Sixty’s Singing Competition, was the M.C. for the evening and he introduced some wonderful solo singers. These included Billy Horgan, Fred Lotty, Tony Blackshields and Charles MacAllister with a selection of well-known favorites.
The Montfort Youth Junior Choir with thanks to Trevor Ryan performed a beautiful selection of Songs from the Shows, under the Musical Direction of Michelle Cooke. Next were CADA Performing Arts Group – “where every young person is a star”, under the Direction of Catherine Mahon-Buckley performing some lively numbers.
The evening of music and fun ended with an hour of Dancing, with the floor of the beautiful Cork City Hall filled with happy people enjoying a selection of Waltzes, Quick-Steps and Line-Dances from music maestro Ger Bruton.
A special word of thanks to all of the singers, dancers and musicians who gave their time so generously to this wonderful event, and to our 200 wonderful guests who braved the cold and wet to make the night such great fun.
Thanks to the members of Cork and Bishopstown Rotary Clubs who helped on the evening. Particular thanks to the staff of Cork City Hall and to our sponsors.
We look forward to seeing you all again next year!
