Saturday 10th - Friday 24th December in front of Brown Thomas, Patricks Street with the support of the City Council and Gardai

Newsboard

This Christmas, the Rotary Clubs of Cork and Bishopstown again join forces on the Remembrance Tree project which they hope will both capture the essence of the Christmas spirit and also provide a simple yet poignant way of remembering loved ones amid the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season.

Starting on Saturday December 10th with a special blessing, and attended by the Lord Mayor, you are welcome to write your personal message of remembrance on a yellow ribbon and this will be placed on the tree in a colourful garland. While there is no charge, donations are welcome.

Funds raised will go to this years special charities - Marymount Hospice, and St Vincent de Paul

A spokesperson for the Clubs said, 'While this years Christmas will be tougher than before, and many people will have worries, the tree offers a moment of reflection and a time to remember loved ones in a special and simple way. We hope that people will take a look at the tree, with each ribbon having its own story of love and sadness, and that the true spirit of Christmas will be made evident for one special moment'

Organisers Tom Woodward and Ger Kilcommons said that this year is the ninth Remembrance Tree and that they are both delighted and humbled at how a simple idea has become such an integral part of the Cork Christmas landscape.

Charities that have benefited from funds raised at the tree include: Cope Foundation, Marymount Hospice, Childrens Leukaemia Ward Mercy Hospital, ARC Cancer Support, Alzheimers Society Cork, Lavanagh Centre/Enable Ireland, and many more. Over €170,000 has been raised so far.
